I made an important decision yesterday.
I have been building a couple of websites. One for the communications work I do (that's where you are now) and one for my photographs. Constructing the photographic website, I was mulling over how I should protect the images from random downloading and copying. I decided not to.
Most of my pictures are of places or people who deserve more of our attention. So I figured, if you care enough about the subject matter to download and share my photos - go for it.
Obviously, it would be nice to be credited. Some of the photographic opportunities I have had (such as Yemen) I have created for myself. But many opportunities have been given to me by the organisations I work for. The aim of what I do is to publicise their work. So, if you want to put a photo of a refugee camp on your desktop, it would be hypocritical of me to stop you.
However if the organisations I work for decide to protect their copyright they may come after you.
